Why Your Website Gets No Traffic (and What to Fix First)
Most sites don't have a traffic problem, they have a 'found by the wrong people' problem. Six causes, and which one to fix first.
"Our website gets no traffic" usually means one of two things: nobody arrives, or the wrong people arrive and nobody calls. Both are fixable, but not by the same work.
Here are the six causes, in the order to fix them.
1. There is no map listing
If you are not in the map results for your trade and your town, you are invisible for the searches that bring phone calls. Claim the listing, set the exact category, add services, hours and ten photos. This is the first thing to do and it is free.
2. One page is trying to do everything
You cannot rank one page for fencing, decks, gates, repairs and three towns. Each of those is a search somebody makes, and each one deserves a page that answers it. Most sites that get no traffic have five pages where they need fifteen.
3. The pages are written about you, not for the customer
"Committed to quality and customer satisfaction" cannot be searched. "Deck repair in Westerville, usually two to four days, from $1,200" can. Write the page in the words a customer would type.
4. Nothing links to you
Google treats a link as a recommendation. A brand-new site with no links is a stranger. The first links are easy and free: your map listing, your trade associations, suppliers, the local sports club you sponsor, a chamber of commerce listing, your own social profiles. Ten real ones beat a hundred bought ones.
5. The site is slow or broken on a phone
If a page takes five seconds on cell data, half the visitors leave before it appears. Check the site on your phone, on cell data, not wifi. Then look at the phone number: if it needs more than one tap, that is the whole problem.
6. You rank, but for the wrong thing
Traffic with no calls is usually a page that attracts learners, job hunters or people looking for something free. Fix the page so it speaks to a buyer: service, area, what it costs, how to book.
How to tell which one you have
In Google Search Console, look at two numbers: how many searches showed your site, and what those searches actually said. If the searches are right and the visitors do not call, the problem is the page. If the searches are wrong, the problem is the words. If there are no searches at all, start at number one.
The good news is that the order matters more than the effort. Map listing first, pages for what customers search second, links third. Most owners see a difference in calls inside sixty days without spending anything on ads.
